MUSICAL VIEWS
About this site:
This site has been developed as an opportunity to write
about music without the restrictions of published media. It gets frustrating
having your work edited or rejected for not fitting a specific format, so this
site exists as an opportunity to spread some of the material I have written
about, interviews I have been fortunate enough to have conducted, and music I
just find I have to write about. A lot of it will seem enthusiastic, and I make
no apology for that. I love music, and tend to write when I am inspired or moved
by music. I hope you may find something of interest, and hopefully it will
encourage you to investigate something new. I know I often search the web trying
to find what someone else thinks or knows about a certain piece of music.
Hopefully the bits and pieces here will help someone else.
About me:
I have had a forty year love
affair with rock music in all its forms, turning ten and discovering The Beatles
in early 1964. I’ve been fortunate enough to write about music in books (Rock
Through History, 1989, 1994; My Generation, 1992; and Heinemann Society and
Culture, 2003). In 2001 I received a scholarship from the Premier of NSW to
study rock’n’roll history in the United States, and travelled in the
aftermath of September 11. I had the enriching experience of finally meeting my
long time hero, Joe South, as well as arguably the greatest musical experience
of my life, being on stage with Chuck Berry as he was doing a sound check for
his 75th birthday concert in St Louis, playing blues to an empty
hall.
I’ve been lucky enough to meet many of
my heroes, and I hope to be able to use this site to include pieces from
interviews that may be of interest to people. My main area of research is the
impact of rock music as a force for social and cultural change. I hope this site
can become for the exchange of information and ideas, and grow to be able to
make some small contribution to a greater appreciation of the impact music has
made on so many lives.
